Chris Hamer and Peg Hevel are parents as well as professionals in their own fields. Both authors have experienced first hand the attributes of animals as part of the family. They also share the special bond of being mother and daughter.









Peg Hevel, R.N., B.S.N., was a professor of nursing and then worked as a Nurse Health Educator, community/family liaison and family counselor in the Montana public school system for twelve years. During that time, she counseled parents, students and staff on growth and development and communication, child abuse prevention and health related issues. She worked on local, state, national and international levels for Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention. Peg has facilitated seminars/workshops and has presented at several national conferences including the National Conference on Child Abuse by the Humane Association. She was invited to present at the International Congress on Child Abuse/Neglect. Peg was a consultant and reviewer of educational materials for Marsh Films, Kendall School for the Deaf and Gallandet College. She was a NARAH certified instructor with Whitewater Therapeutic Riding and Recreation Association in Salmon, Idaho. Peg is a freelance author publishing articles in newspaper and magazines. She has also published stories in the books: Horses Tale for the Soul series, Volume IV and V, Dog Tales for the Soul, Changing Course, Happy Endings, several Chicken Soup for the Soul books and a full length novel called, The Ivory Elephant.


Chris Hamer, M.S.,Certified Canine Behavior Consultant,(CCBC) has worked with dogs and their families to develop better relationships for over twenty-five years. After getting her Master’s degree in Animal Behavior from Western Washington University in 1985, Chris began professionally training gun dogs and was one of the first women to train gun dogs, including hunting retrievers, pointers, and flushers. She actively competed in AKC and NARHA hunt tests and is a qualified judge for all levels of the hunt test program. From 1983-1997, Chris owned and operated Wyndhaven Kennels in Northwest Washington State where she would oversee the training of over 50 dogs each day. She is the creator of Dog- Sense Seminars; a two-day intensive training designed to turn dog owners into their dog’s leader and teacher. Currently, Chris conducts family trainings intended to improve the relationships between families and their pets. She also gives private and in-home training and gun dog classes. She is a member of the American Pet Dog Trainer Association (APDT), a certified member and member of the board of directors of the International Association of Dog Behavior Counselors (IADBC) and the chairperson for the IADBC Education Collaborative. Chris is the author of DogSense, Building a Bond through Obedience Training and a contributing author of Dog Tales for the Soul. She is a regular contributor for the nationally syndicated radio broadcast, Pet Tales. Chris lives in Mount Vernon Washington with two teenage boys, twelve laying hens, three dogs, two geese, a cat, a duck, two horses, and her husband of twenty-five years.
